Let's start with some context...
Open Data Day (ODD) is a global celebration that champions the use of open data. On this day, groups across virtually every country come together to host local events, leveraging open data to benefit their communities. Spearheaded by the Open Knowledge Foundation (OKFN), the 2024 edition of ODD sees a collaborative effort with Jokkolabs Banjul (Gambia), Open Knowledge Germany, Open Knowledge Ghana, and Open Knowledge Nepal β all members of the Open Knowledge Network β all members of the Open Knowledge Network.
In an effort to embrace the diverse tapestry of global cultures, since 2023, the OKFN has allowed organizations to schedule their Open Data Day events at any point during the first week of March, from the 2nd to the 8th, ensuring maximum participation and impact. All contributions and outputs from these events are freely available, encouraging widespread use and re-use.
Following CKAN's endorsement as a digital public good, the thematic focus of this year's celebration is on utilizing Open Data to advance the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a testament to the power of open data in fostering global development and sustainability.
Open Data Day is not just a day. It embodies a global commitment to transparency, collaboration, and community. It's a day that challenges us to rethink the essence of "open" β transforming it from a mere attribute of data to a philosophy for the world. This isn't about data for the sake of data. Itβs about data as a lever for change, for driving us towards a more open world. Itβs about open dataβs power to transform, to make the invisible visible, and the impossible possible.
In the heart of this movement is CKAN, recognized as a digital public good. As we step into 2024, our participation goes beyond mere involvement. We want to celebrate a shift. This shift, gaining momentum over the last decade and surging forward in recent years, is not just about acknowledging the potential of open data. It's about actively engaging with it.
It's easy to talk about world-changing goals such as the SDGs, those ambitious benchmarks set by the United Nations to forge a better world. But on Open Data Day, let's do more than talk. Let's act. Let's demonstrate, with every dataset shared and every project launched, how the granular can indeed make the grandiose not just possible but palpable.
With the advent of Open Data Day 2024 from March 2 to 8, our CKAN Demo Days initiative is set to highlight the collective efforts of our community. This initiative, aligned with our global advocacy efforts alongside the OKFN, aims to deepen community engagement and share the diverse experiences within our ecosystem.
This week-long event marks a unique opportunity for the CKAN community to connect, share, and shine. Let this not be a week of passive observation but of dynamic action, as we collectively demonstrate the versatility and impact of open data in driving us toward a more sustainable, inclusive future.
